A Short History of the Crinkle Cookie

They’re soft and round and oh-so delicious. Crinkle cookies remain a popular sweet treat enjoyed by people the world over. At the Crinkled Shop, we specialize exclusively on this delectable confection, baked fresh daily and coming in a variety of flavors.

According to popular lore, the crinkle cookie originated in the first half of the 20th century in the home of a Mrs. Helen Fredell of St. Paul, Minnesota. In Betty Crocker’s book, “Cooky Carnival” (which features molasses crinkles), she speaks of her visit to Mrs. Fredell’s house one day where she was first introduced to the sweet treat. “They were so delicious, I begged for the recipe!” Thanks to her, thousands have enjoyed these spicy cookies.

That original molasses crinkle recipe includes sugar, shortening, egg, molasses, flour, baking soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon, and ginger. But over the years, crinkles have expanded to include such yummy flavors as pumpkin spice, red velvet, eggnog, chocolate, lemon…well, you get the idea. The creative options are practically endless!
